Two Canadians raise money to help polar bears worldwide
Sorin Mihailovici and Matt Cook, both from Edmonton, Alberta, threw a dart at a map in the hopes of traveling to a new and exciting place, and doing some good in the world. When their dart hit Svalbard, the two adventurers decided to raise money for their trip and to increase awareness of the plight of the polar bear.
While Cook and Mihailovici need to raise a minimum of $14,000 for their trip, the two Canadians have promised to donate $5 from each donation to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), with a goal of $5 for each polar bear in the world - approximately 20,000 to 25,000.
Using an increasingly popular model with new fundraising sites like Kickstarter, the two friends will be rewarding donors with gifts for certain levels of donations. At $40, $400 and $1,000 levels, rewards will be given including heating pads, a phone call from Cook and Mihailovici and even a one-night stay in the Rockies in the $1,000 package.
The two adventurers will be spending Christmas on the island, and plan on shooting a documentary on polar bears during their stay there.
