Siku update: the polar bear cub plays.
A few months ago, Siku, the orphaned polar bear cub in Denmark, was being bottle-fed by zookeepers. Now eleven weeks old, Siku is playing in the snow at the Scandinavian Wildlife Park for two hours a day.

Scientists agree that one of the keys to polar bears' survival is their innate ability to play. Siku, who cannot yet stand, is no less playful than his adult cousins and is a symbol for polar bears around the world, serving as a testament to the strong-willed nature of these white beasts.

Siku was a Youtube sensation the moment he was born, sucking on milk bottles and vying for more food. When his mother was not producing enough milk, zookeepers had to adopt him in order to keep him alive. Meaning "ice" in Greenland Inuit language Inupiaq, Siku is a name common for zoo polar bears, according to the Huffington Post.

There are only about 25,000 polar bears left in the world, and their habitat is consistently threatened by rising waters and detached glaciers. Starting on International Polar Bear Day on February 27, Siku will be visible online at polarbearcam.com.
